South Korea's craft beer market began explosive growth in the mid-2010s. With the introduction of craft beers from overseas in the 2010s, and the amendment of the Liquor Tax lAW in 2014 allowing micro-breweries to distribute their beers externally, the craft beer industry saw significant expansion. Alongside this growth, the "Korea International Beer Expo: KIBEX" was launched in 2019, as a platform solely dedicated to the beer industry. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years, KIBEX has been held annually, establishing itself as the premier beer business expo in the Korea.
Organized by GMEG, a specialized exhibition and convention company in the beer and liquor industry, and sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the U.S. Agricultural Trade Office, the Korea-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Korea Craft Brewers Association, and the Japan Craft Beer Association, KIBEX 2024 will take place from April 11th to 13th at COEX C Hall in Seoul. In its 6th year, KIBEX 2024 will feature companies representing various aspects of the beer industry including raw materials, equipment, breweries, and importers. Concurrently, Drink Seoul will also be held alongside KIBEX 2024, featuring craft beverages, Korean traditional drinks, and food.

KIBEX 2023, held last year, featured 189 companies from 10 countries, comprising 300 booths, and welcomed over 18,000 visitors. Compared to the year 2022, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, participation and booths increased by approximately 50%, and the number of visitors doubled. This year's KIBEX is expected to be the largest to date, with 320 booths from 230 companies representing 10 countries including the United States and Germany. It is anticipated to attract over 20,000 visitors, including 3,500 buyers.
As the 6th edition of KIBEX kicks off, it solidifies its position as the leading showcase for the Korean beer industry, attracting participation from major countries leading the beer industry. With the increasing diversity in the Korean beer market, there is a growing market potential, not only for beer brewers but also for equipment, importers, distributors and other sectors.ย

The event will not only host exhibitions but also various ancillary events including conferences and international beer competitions such as the Korea International Beer Conference (KIBCON) and the Korea International Beer Award (KIBA).
The Korea International Beer Conference will delve into topics such as market changes and overcoming difficulties in the post-COVID era, as well as discussing new trends in the beverage market. Representatives from craft beer associations in Korea, the United States, and Japan will analyze the trends and changes in the beer market in 2024 and discuss strategies to overcome market challenges. Presentations will also cover topics such as efficient use of raw materials for beer production, diversification of the beer market, and trends in new beverage markets such as beer, distilled spirits, and whiskey.

The 3rd Korea International Beer Award received 346 entries from 76 breweries in 16 countries across 89 categories. Of these, 42 were from Korea and 34 were from overseas breweries. The judging panel, consisting of esteemed judges from around the world including 13 from Korea and 28 from overseas, will be observed by Yusuke Yamamoto, president of the Japan Craft Beer Association. Last year's competition saw 322 beers from 69 breweries in 14 countries judged, with 83 entries from abroad. This year, with 135 international beers submitted, there has been an approximately 63% increase compared to the previous year, solidifying the competition's international standing.
The growth of the KIBEX reflects the increasing diversity of the Korean beer ecosystem, combining various consumer needs and fostering market vitality, leading to new business opportunities. This growth signifies a shift towards a market where diverse market participants coexist, rather than being dominated by a few companies. Through events like the KIBEX, the diversity of the beer industry is showcased, providing opportunities for new businesses, and contributing to the beer ecosystem. The 6th KIBEX, opening on April 11th, 2024, will provide insights into the current state of the Korean beer market and its new possibilities.
