On October 14, 2024, at the International Beer Cup awards ceremony held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, Korean beers achieved a remarkable feat by winning a total of 21 medals. The International Beer Cup, established in 1996 and organized by the Japan Craft Beer Association, is Japan’s largest international beer competition. Its goal is to increase global consumer awareness of beer diversity and quality. For the 2024 competition, 1,423 beers from 370 breweries in 20 countries competed across 120 style categories. This represents a 17% increase from the 1,215 entries in 2023, with 74 more breweries participating than in the previous year.

The judging process, which took place from October 11 to 13, was divided into bottle/can and keg sections, with 90 beer judges from 53 countries evaluating the entries. Notably, medals were only awarded to beers that met a certain quality standard. In the bottle/can section, 58 out of 120 categories had gold medal winners, while in the keg section, only 31 out of 74 categories had gold medal recipients. As a result, only 341 beers were honored with medals.

Korean beers earned 21 medals across 10 breweries, including 8 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze medals. Notable gold medal winners include Ggeek Beer Company, Vaneheim Brewery, Bubble Chemistry, Beervana Brewing, Sokcho Beer Co, Artmonster Brewery, Whasoo Company, and Goose Island Korea.

Additionally, in the category champion selection, which picks the best beers from the gold medal winners in each of the 12 major categories, Ggeek Beer Company, Beervana Brewing, Sokcho Beer, and Goose Island Korea emerged as champions, marking a major success for Korean craft beer.

Korean Craft Beer: Recognized for Quality Amidst Challenges

Korean craft beer has faced significant challenges in the wake of the pandemic, with the ongoing economic downturn and intensifying market competition. Despite these difficulties, Korean craft beer has continued to grow, particularly showing remarkable improvements in quality compared to the past.

Entering the 2020s, Korean craft beer has gradually gained recognition in the global market for its quality. It has garnered attention at prestigious international competitions such as the World Beer Cup in the United States, the European Beer Star, and Japan's International Beer Cup, where numerous Korean beers have won awards each year.

Korean craft breweries have continuously pushed boundaries with beer development and brewing technology, refusing to be deterred by challenges. By keeping up with trends while simultaneously pursuing diversity in beer styles, they have introduced high-quality beers that are competitive in the global market. These persistent efforts have been reflected in the consistent success of Korean craft beers at global beer competitions. Most recently, Korean breweries demonstrated their growth again by achieving impressive results at the 2024 International Beer Cup.

A representative from the Korea Craft Brewers Association stated, "The results from this year's International Beer Cup confirm that the strategy of prioritizing quality, which distinguishes small breweries from low-cost commercial beers, has proven successful."
